The Dark Night at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College: A Story of Horror and Justice
It was an ordinary night at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The hustle and bustle slowly quieted down as the early morning hours approached. But while the city slept, something terrible was about to happen inside the hospital. The events of August 9, 2024, would soon shock the entire nation.
A Disturbing Arrival
Around 11 pm, 33-year-old Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, entered the hospital. CCTV footage shows him casually walking through the hallways, wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and holding a helmet, which identified him as someone associated with the Kolkata Police. Nothing about his appearance seemed suspicious, but within hours, a horrific crime would occur in the same building.
The footage later revealed that Roy was seen near the chest department, appearing to be looking for someone. That someone was a 31-year-old trainee doctor who had just finished her tiring shift. She had no idea that Roy, who had been following her since the day before, was waiting for the right moment to strike.
The Terrible Crime
At around 1 am, the young doctor went to the seminar hall on the third floor to take a short rest. A junior doctor spoke with her at 2:30 am, noting that she seemed tired but calm. She went back to sleep, unaware of the danger she was in. Sometime after that, Roy attacked her. By the morning, her body was discovered—she had been brutally raped and murdered.
The scene was horrifying. Her semi-nude body had multiple injuries, showing the violence she had suffered. Among the items found at the scene was a Bluetooth device, which had been seen around Roy's neck in the CCTV footage. This device, along with his presence at the hospital, directly linked him to the crime.
The Arrest and Aftermath
News of the crime quickly spread, sparking outrage across the country. Doctors and medical staff protested, demanding justice. The Kolkata Police acted swiftly, arresting Roy on August 10. However, the investigation revealed more disturbing details about him. A psychological profile showed that Roy was addicted to pornography and had "animal-like instincts." He confessed to the crime without showing any remorse.
But as the case continued, Roy began to show signs of desperation. In court, he broke down, insisting that he was innocent and agreeing to a lie detector test to prove it. "I haven’t committed any crime. I’m being framed. Maybe this test will prove that,” he told the judge. The court allowed the test and sent Roy to 14 days of judicial custody.
Uncovering the Truth
As investigators looked deeper into Roy’s past, more troubling details emerged. On August 8, the day before the murder, Roy had been seen watching the doctor and her colleagues in the chest ward. Later that night, he reportedly visited a red-light district, behaving erratically. These actions, along with his history of violence—his mother-in-law claimed he caused his wife's miscarriage—painted a picture of a man capable of extreme cruelty.
The investigation, now handled by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), also began looking into other possible suspects. The court approved lie detector tests for five other individuals, including four doctors who had interacted with the victim on the night of the crime.
Seeking Justice
As the case continues, the memory of the young doctor’s life cut short haunts those who seek justice. The brutality of the crime has united people across the country, with the medical community demanding accountability.
For now, the focus remains on uncovering the full truth and ensuring that those responsible face justice. But the horror of that night will never be forgotten, a stark reminder that danger can hide even in the most familiar places.
